Ultrasound Patient Information Leaflet
You will need to arrive for your appointment with a full bladder as this will allow a good picture to be seen on the scan.

Please drink 1 ½ pints of water 1 ½ hours before the scan.

What happens when you arrive?
Please note that the Clinical Team may be male or female.

Our Healthcare Assistant will collect you from the waiting area.
They will explain what will happen and answer any questions.

What is an Ultrasound scan?
An ultrasound scan is a simple painless procedure that is used to produce a picture.
A water- based gel is applied and then an ultrasound probe is moved over that area.

The sonographer will press down on your tummy to improve the picture detail.

The pictures are viewed on a screen, and you will be asked to breathe in and hold your breath at different times during the scan.

Once the scan is complete, the gel will be wiped away. It will not stain your clothes.
Each scan takes around 15 minutes.

You may then be asked to perform a flow rate test. If not, you will then go in to see the Urologist specialist doctor.

What happens next?
This will depend on the results of the investigations performed on the day.
The Urologist specialist doctor will advise you about any necessary further treatment or appointments.
