Seborrheic Keratoses
Seborrheic keratosis is a common, non-cancerous skin growth that appears as a brown, black, or pale wart-like patch. These growths typically develop on the face, chest, shoulders, or back and are more common with age. While seborrheic keratosis is harmless, removal may be desired for cosmetic reasons or comfort.
Moles
A mole is a common, usually harmless, skin growth that can appear anywhere on the body. Moles vary in size, shape, and colour, typically being brown or black. While most moles are benign, changes in their appearance can be a sign of skin cancer, making regular checks and assessment by your GP essential for your health. Removal may be desired for cosmetic reasons or comfort.
Cysts
A sebaceous cyst is a common, benign lump that forms under the skin, usually on the face, neck, or torso. It occurs when sebaceous glands become blocked, leading to a buildup of sebum. Although typically harmless, sebaceous cysts can become painful or infected, making removal advisable/ desired for cosmetic reasons or comfort.
Lipomas
A lipoma is a benign, soft, and slow-growing fatty lump that forms under the skin. Typically found on the neck, shoulders, back, or arms, lipomas are non-cancerous and generally painless. However, they can become uncomfortable or cosmetically concerning, making professional assessment and removal an option.
Chalazions
A chalazion is a small, slow-growing lump or swelling that appears on the eyelid, usually caused by a blocked oil gland (meibomian gland). Unlike a stye, a chalazion is typically painless and may feel firm or rubbery to the touch. However, they can become uncomfortable or cosmetically concerning, making professional assessment and removal an option.
Dermatofibromas
A dermatofibroma is a harmless, non-cancerous growth under the skin that feels like a firm, rubbery button and can be brown or pinkish. It often appears on the arms or legs, sometimes after a minor trauma like an insect bite or scratch. While not dangerous and often not requiring treatment, it can be removed if it’s bothersome or if its nature is uncertain.
Other Lesions
Are generally non-cancerous and mostly painless. However, they can become uncomfortable or cosmetically concerning, making professional assessment and removal an option.
On the day
During the appointment, your surgeon will examine and ask questions about your lesion and will also discuss your medical history and any current medication. They will explain the procedure and discuss whether there is a likelihood of recurrence and scarring, and how to prevent infection.
When you are happy, you will be asked to sign a consent form to allow the procedure to go ahead. Any medical procedure can be a cause of anxiety, and they will answer any questions or concerns that you may have.
