What is an Ultrasound scan and examination of Testes?

What is a testes ultrasound scan?

An ultrasound scan is a simple painless procedure that is used to produce a picture.

It uses sound waves to create a picture.

You will be asked to bring your clothes and underwear down to mid-thigh level and lie down.

Your privacy will be maintained as much as possible throughout.

A water- based gel will be applied to your scrotum and the ultrasound probe is placed on that area to obtain a picture.

Both testicles will be scanned in this way, and pictures will be taken.

These will be put in your notes as a record.

A Healthcare Assistant will be present as a chaperone.

Once the scan is complete, you will be left behind the curtain to wipe the gel away and get dressed. It will not stain your clothes.

Each scan takes around 15 minutes.

What happens at the examination?

As well as the ultrasound scan, some patients may need a physical examination of their testes.

If you require a physical examination, the Doctor will ask you to lie down on a couch in order to examine both of your testicles.

The Doctor will also ask you questions about your symptoms.

A Healthcare Assistant will be present as a chaperone.

What happens next?

This will depend on the results of the investigations performed on the day.

The Doctor will advise you about any necessary further treatment or appointments.

The results will be back with your GP within 5 days.
